WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Oct. 7 marks one year since Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 200 people hostage. Since then, thousands of Palestinians have died in the war, sparking protests nationwide and around the globe. On Monday, several agencies across D.C. and Maryland are taking extra security measures and increasing their presence in the community as several protests, demonstrations and vigils are expected in the area. Police said agencies are working together to safeguard businesses, residents and visitors. Authorities are also partnering with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to monitor events that are unfolding across the world. Colleges brace for Oct. 7 anniversary The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said that there were no known threats in the District of Columbia as of Monday morning. The U.S. Secret Service said it works with federal and local law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of its protectees during large public gatherings or other events in D.C. This includes additional public safety measures, including anti-scale fencing, near the White House. In Maryland, the Montgomery County Police Department said the community can expect to see extra patrols to help ensure public safety. Police are urging the community to remain vigilant and help keep the community safe.
