There is a taste of fall in the air after a cold front pushed through the DMV last night. This front brought some rain to our western counties, but the rest of the area stayed dry. Breezy northwest winds have developed behind the front and are expected to continue through the end of the day, steadily blowing at 15-25 mph. Chilly air will funnel into the area with these winds, arriving tonight. Under clear skies tonight, temperatures will tumble quickly. Overnight lows will reach the upper 40s and lower 50s to the east, even in DC. To the west, readings will tumble into the upper 30s and lower 40s, with frost possible in some of the coldest mountain valleys. Besides a few minor adjustments, the forecast for the rest of the week will hold steady with the same two themes: sunshine and chilly air. Tuesday will be a near-repeat of today, minus the breezy northwest winds. High temperatures will be in the 60s, with lows back down into the 30s and 40s. Frost will remain a concern across the mountain counties through Wednesday night. To the south, a beast lurks in the tropics, and it will be a big story through mid-week. Hurricane Milton is now a Category 5; it was a tropical storm yesterday. This storm is expected to slam into Florida's Gulf Coast as a major hurricane on Wednesday, bringing several life-threatening threats there. We will monitor Milton closely in the coming days, even though it will not directly impact the DMV. We will see a few clouds from the outer edge of Milton as it passes by on Wednesday and Thursday, but that will be the only sign we see of the hurricane. Another surge of colder air brought on by Canadian high pressure will keep the storm away from us while pushing temperatures back down under clear skies for Thursday and Friday. High temperatures will lean into the lower and middle 60s, with overnight lows more likely to fall into the 30s and lower 40s across the entire DMV. Quiet and dry conditions continue into the weekend as this ridge hangs nearby, but it will warm back into the 70s. A passing front could bring a few showers by next Sunday, but that is the only chance of rain over the next week. Have a great rest of your Monday! 7-Day Forecast: Today: Mostly sunny and breezy.
