by Wm. Steven Humphrey If you’re reading this, you probably know the value of the Mercury’s news reporting, arts and culture coverage, event calendar, and the bevy of events we host throughout the year. The work we do helps our city shine, but we can’t do it without your support. If you believe Portland benefits from smart, local journalism and arts coverage, please consider making a small monthly contribution, because without you, there is no us. Thanks for your support! GOOD MORNING, PORTLAND! 👋 If you love yesterday's gorgeously sunny weather, you're in luck! You're getting a repeat today, along with a high of 77. But don't worry, cloud lovers, you'll get more of what you want on Wednesday through Friday. And now, for something EVERYONE wants... here's the NEWS! IN LOCAL NEWS: • Congrats to Swedish citizen Archibald Casteel, who won yesterday's successful Portland Marathon, completing the course in a speedy two hours and 22 minutes. Props go out also to Rachel Peters, the first woman across the finish line, crossing in two hours and 48 minutes. • Once again the Oregonian Editorial Board goes out of their way to please daddy (AKA the Portland Business Alliance—but sadly, no matter what they do, daddy will never love them 😢): Multnomah County voters in Districts 1 and 2 can help inject urgency and change the direction of the county commission this election. They should vote for Vadim Mozyrsky and Sam Adams as their representatives on the board of commissioners. However, he may not skate away so easily now that the city auditor has reopened the investigation into how he used more than $6000 in taxpayer money to make himself seem less loathsome on his personal Wikipedia page. We'll hear more about that at the end of the month... but in the meantime, check out his Wiki page! It gets more interesting by the day! (And if you don't want to depend on the auditor, there's something you can do about it.) • Scientists are asking what's up with Washington state's Mount Adams, which has shown very little activity for decades and is suddenly the spot of several minor earthquakes. However researchers are saying that while it's a mystery there's no cause for alarm, because Adams' neighbors (Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens) "get somewhere between 10 and 20 earthquakes a month." Ahem... that does not make me feel better! Strap on those brains... it's time for another super fun POP QUIZ PDX! This week's trivia quiz includes sick burns, unpronounceable Oregon names, and it's HALLOWEEN CANDY TIME, BAY-BEEES! 👻 See how well YOU score!https://t.co/YmQmHxVQi9 — Portland Mercury 🗞 (@portlandmercury) October 6, 2024 IN NATIONAL/WORLD NEWS: • Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, in which around 1200 people were killed and 250 kidnapped (only 100 have been returned), which in turn led to a year of devastating Israeli strikes against Gaza that have killed more than 40,000 people (with an assist from American bombs). And now the conflict is intensifying, as shelling is being traded between Israel and Lebanon, and the Middle East is teetering on the edge of all-out war.  Israel's military campaign since Hamas's Oct. 7 attack has devastated the Gaza Strip, leaving an estimated 42 million tons of debris piled where houses, mosques, schools and shops used to stand https://t.co/p8sRUMufpE — Reuters (@Reuters) October 7, 2024 • The Supreme Court has returned from break to give more comfort to anti-abortion zealots, declining to hear a Biden administration appeal that federal law says emergency rooms must treat pregnant women who are suffering from serious complications—despite what draconian anti-abortion laws (like the one in Texas) says. The Supreme's non-decision keeps the lower court's bullshit ruling in place. • On the heels of Helene, Hurricane Milton is bearing down on the Florida coast and is threatening to become a deadly Category Four storm. Emergency evacuations are being prepped for Tampa and Orlando, as Milton is expected to hit the west coast of the state on Wednesday. BREAKING: Alex Cooper, host of the Call Her Daddy podcast, reveals that Donald Trump was invited to appear on her podcast but DECLINED. MAGA accused Cooper of being “biased” by having Kamala on. Turns out Trump was just too scared to show up. pic.twitter.com/a265c9bY0L — Trump L’s (@Trump_Losses) October 6, 2024 • Billionaire tech douche Elon Musk joined Trump for a rally in Pennsylvania yesterday, and is getting eaten alive on the various social platforms for hopping around the stage like a kangaroo on meth. Meanwhile Trump's veep pick, J.D. "Couch Enthusiast" Vance, confirmed that if his dark lord and master is elected, the former prez will "defund" women's health provider Planned Parenthood. • And finally... I don't know the particular reason WHY you need to see this... I just know that you do.
