A 56-year-old man with a machete — and an apparent history of mental health problems — was shot and killed during an altercation with a fellow resident at the Bella Vista apartment complex on Friday afternoon.The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) reported that homicide in a press release posted on Saturday afternoon to the social media site X.According to the press release, at around 5:29 p.m. on Friday, city police officers were dispatched to one of the upper floors of a building at Bella Vista, which is a five-building, 1,413-unit complex on Eastern Street reserved for elderly and disabled tenants. Police responded to 911 calls about a disturbance involving a man, later identified as John Reynolds, who was reportedly ​“carrying a machete in the hallway, banging on apartment doors and rambling. Callers reported that Reynolds had a history of mental health problems and may have been under the influence. Dispatch then began receiving calls of people hearing gunshots.”Officers determined that Reynolds had been shot ​“by another resident of the floor after an altercation between the two.” Reynolds died from his injuries, and his body was removed from the scene by the Officer of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.“The individual who shot Reynolds has not been arrested at this time and the investigation is ongoing,” the press release states.Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed Friday’s homicide or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203 – 946-634 or through the department’s anonymous tip line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).Friday’s shooting death marked the city’s ninth homicide so far this year.
