ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Hurricane Helene has made a major impact in the Southeast since it first reached landfall at the end of September. The city of Asheville, N.C. is one place that has seen mass devastation. The Town of Webster's Parks and Recreation Commissioner Chris Bilow wanted to help however he could. With inspiration from his friend Mike Stowe in Avoca, who set up a supply drive there, Bilow helped to organize one here. "I just thought 'what a great idea,' what a great opportunity for the community to share and donate supplies that are certainly needed down in Asheville," Bilow said. Bilow heard of the severity of Helene's impact from family living in North Carolina experiencing it first-hand. He said the support from the local community has been overwhelming. "From a community like Webster and the surrounding towns, it's not difficult for us to get people to rally in, and that's exactly what we've seen," Bilow said. "Because at the end of the day, it's the human thing to do. To provide and help each other out." How you can help after Helene The drive is set up in the breezeway and lobby of the Webster Recreation Center. Since they first started accepting donations last Thursday, the walls have been lined with supplies. So far they've received food, clothing, diapers and cleaning supplies among other necessities. Bilow said he hopes the donation count continues to grow. "My hope is that by Tuesday, when we kind of put a ribbon on everything that we have, I hope we double what we have so that when they bring that tractor trailer up to load it up, we fill that trailer with supplies just from this facility," Bilow said. As of right now, the drive is accepting donations of any of the aforementioned necessities. Bilow emphasized that sleeping bags and tents are useful as well for those who may be displaced from their homes. Updates on the drive's progress and the address for the donation drop-off can be found on the Town of Webster's Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
