HOUSTON (WROC) — After forcing a punt, the Bills got the ball back with 32 seconds left on their own 3-yard line. They were tied 20-20 and the Texans had all three of their timeouts. The Bills were tasked with running out the clock to force overtime. They failed and the Texans kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired. "We were in a tough situation," said McDermott after the game. "They're holding three timeouts, they've got a good field goal kicker. We needed to run the clock and move the chains and that's on me. We didn't do that there, and that's my fault." Sean McDermott and the Bills' coaching staff chose to pass the ball three times, with all three passes falling incomplete. The Bills were forced to punt, and after a 13-yard return and a net 43-yard punt, Houston had the ball on Buffalo's 46 yard-line. After the game, McDermott was asked if he was on board with the play calling, passing the ball three times. "I'm not going to get into that. I don't think that's relevant right now. Overall, that's on me. We've just got to do a better job, I've got to do a better job in that situation," said McDermott. CJ Stroud completed a short pass to Dare Ogunbowale for five yards and the Texans called a timeout. Ka'imi Fairbairn kicked a 59-yard field goal to give the Texans a 23-20 win. "When you talk about [them] holding three timeouts, where we were, and they have a really long-legged field goal kicker. We knew that," said McDermott. "There's a potential that if the situation goes three straight runs, you're running six seconds off potentially each time, you may be in a similar situation. Either way, we've got to do a better job and that starts with me, 100 percent." McDermott was asked if when it comes down to it, he wants the ball in Josh Allen's hands in that scenario. "I love Josh [Allen] with the ball in his hands. I do. Efficient offense was the right approach there and I didn't have us do that. We learn from that. Tough situation like I said... you go back and forth," said McDermott. McDermott did admit that he would have liked to change the play on the first play of the drive. "I probably should have run it on the first play and just said 'Hey, where are we now?'" said McDermott. "Either way, we're probably going to have to move the chains one time to not give them a chance." James Cook was having an effective day on the ground, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. He had 20 carries for 82 yards. Perhaps the best chance for the Bills to run the clock out and force the overtime actually came on defense. On Houston's final play before their punt, Stroud was called for intentional grounding. The Bills had the option to accept a ten-second runoff, but they chose to keep the time on the clock. McDermott said that they considered accepting the ten-second runoff, but he also wanted to consider the fact that his offense could have won the game in regulation. "We talked about it after the game. You don't know where that punt is going to land. If the punt goes in the end zone, we're at the 20 and we have a chance," said McDermott. More than any late-game decision-making, the Bills lost because their offense was inefficient and they were down 20-3 in the thrid quarter. But McDermott's choices at the end of the game will certainly be discussed and debated in the coming week.
