HARVEY, La. (WGNO) — Louisiana residents have very little time left to register to vote in the upcoming election. Voting advocates want you to know the key policies and the importance of your vote by Nov. 5. "We want everybody to know that every vote is important in every election, even on the parish level, it's important. But we also want the constituents in the community to come out to be educated about some of the issues in this key race," said Co-chair of Voter Education and Engagement Community at St. Joseph the Worker Church Shewayn Watson. Crews discover body following Gentilly fire According to the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office, the deadline to register in person or by mail to vote is Monday. However, voters can still register to vote online until Tuesday, Oct. 15. State Senator Patrick Connick says this is not an opportunity you should pass on but participate in. "We have a right to vote. Don't waste it because, you know, if you can vote, go vote. I don't care who you vote for but exercise your right to vote to make our area better. Our state is better, and our country is better," said Connick. Local organizations help mobilize relief efforts to those affected by Hurricane Helene Only about 36% of registered voters cast ballots in last October's governor's race, which was the lowest Louisiana gubernatorial primary since 2011. Orleans Parish Elections Commissioner Darren Lombard stressed the importance of doing your research about who or what is on the ballot locally. "We have the congressional race, school board and also, you may have some amendments on the ballot as well. You should do your research on everything. You can go to the Secretary of State's website and look at information there as far as the election process is concerned," said Lombard.
