The union between the Browns and Deshaun Watson is like the words spoken in a wedding vow: “For better or worse, for richer and richer, for sack after sack, to end of contract do us part.” As the game wore on, Watson looked like he wanted to be anywhere in the world but Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md., on Oct 6. He misfired on passes — some low, some high, some wide — Jerry Jeudy dropped a pass in the end zone, and his protection deserted him again. Coach Kevin Stefanski inserted Jameis Winston for one final series long after the 34-13 final was decided in the Commanders’ favor, but it was only a cameo for the player picked first overall by the Buccaneers in the 2015 draft. “We’re not changing quarterbacks,” Stefanski told reporters one minute into his postgame press conference. “We need to play better. I need to coach better. That’s really what it is.” Switching quarterbacks would not solve the problems on defense even if Winston played a perfect game. The next time defensive players celebrate a successful play when the Browns are down two touchdowns, they should be fined. The Browns, a dismal 1-4, were gashed for 215 rushing yards and 435 yards overall. Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels scorched Denzel Ward on a deep pass for 66 yards in the first quarter and Martin Emerson deep to Dyami Brown for a 41-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Problems run deep on both sides of the ball. The Browns’ best player through five games has been punter Corey Bojorquez, which is sad for a team that went into the season with a realistic goal of making the Super Bowl. Soon they’ll be lowering their sites to finishing over .500 if things don’t improve quickly. Rookie right guard Zak Zinter, playing because Wyatt Teller is on injured reserve, has not played well, but he is not the only problem on the offensive line. Center Ethan Pocic had to leave the game with a knee injury. Left tackle Jedrick Wills started after missing last week with a knee injury and looked rusty. Watson was sacked seven times and hit a total of 11 times by the Commanders. He has been sacked 25 times and hit a total of 62 times in just five games — a number that doesn’t include the 25 times he has rushed with the ball. The Browns are a 1999-expansion-team-like 12 of 66 (18.2 percent) on third down. They were 1-for-13 on third down against the Commanders. They have seven offensive touchdowns and are averaging a miniscule 3.8 yards a play. Opponents are averaging 5.4 yards a play. Watson is averaging 4.8 yards an attempt. Ken Dorsey brought new schemes as offensive coordinator, but it is impossible to know exactly what the offense is supposed to look like because everything bogs down before it can get going. “We’re trying to figure out what offensive identity we want to be at,” Watson said after the game. “The time is clicking. We have to figure that out quick. We shoot ourselves in the foot. It’s tough. It’s tough. I’m doing what I need to do as far as trying to get the ball out as fast as possible and make the correct reads.” The Browns are unified on one point. They agree the offense’s woes are because of collective failures. “We need to play better as an offense,” Stefanski said. “We need to be able to move the ball on first and second down, convert when we get to third down, score in the red zone, We’re not doing that. We need to play better as an offense. We need to coach better as an offense.” The Browns’ first possession of the third quarter illustrated the entire season. Already down, 24-3, but with a chance to cut the Washington lead to two touchdowns, the Browns had the ball first-and-goal on the 2-yard-line. Zinter was called for a false start, Watson was sacked for one yard, Jeudy dropped a pass that hit him in the hands in the end zone and then Watson threw incomplete on third down to make it fourth-and-goal on the 8. Stefanski decided to go for it, but the Browns got caught with 12 men in the huddle and took a delay of game penalty. At that point, fourth-and-13, Stefanski settled for a 31-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins. “We had penalties and miscommunications, which are completely on me,” Stefanski said. Nick Chubb came off the P.U.P. list on Oct. 2. He must be added to the 53-man roster by Oct. 23 (he could be added sooner) to be eligible to play this season. But Chubb cannot save this team the way it is playing. Diana Russini of The Athletic reported the Browns held a players-only meeting after losing to the Raiders, 20-16, on Sept. 29 in Las Vegas. It apparently did not help “We’ve talked enough over the last two weeks,” Myles Garrett said. “There’s been a lot of conversation — offense, defense, the defensive meeting room. We’ve had enough talk. Just go out and do your job – individually and as a team.”
