Marlon Taylor, who works for SDG&E, is running for re-election to a seat on the Encinitas Union School District board of trustees. The San Diego Union-Tribune asked all the candidates running for school board in districts around San Diego County about their policies, plans and priorities. Here’s what Taylor told us about his. Why are you running for school board? What makes you a good candidate? I am running for re-election because I believe that the behavior and actions of a school board trustee set the tone for the entire district. It is essential that we lead by example, fostering a safe and welcoming environment that celebrates our differences. Every child deserves a quality education that enables them to thrive and succeed. Marlon Taylor (Courtesy Marlon Taylor) As a retired Navy veteran with a deep commitment to service and community, I bring a unique perspective to the EUSD board of trustees. Additionally, as a parent of two children who have benefited from EUSD schools, I understand the critical importance of providing a high-quality education for all students. What is the most important issue currently facing your school district? The budget challenges facing the state represent a significant issue for our district. It is essential to ensure that our facilities, staff, and curriculum adequately address the current and future needs of all students, particularly those who are most vulnerable. What are the top three specific things you would seek to accomplish on the school board? Academic success for ESL students: I am committed to continuing efforts to improve our math and reading scores, with a particular focus on supporting our English as a second language (ESL) students. By fostering an inclusive environment where these students and their families feel integrated into our school communities, we can positively impact their academic success. Measure Z bond initiative: Many of our schools are aging and require significant repairs to keep them up to the standards that the community demands. I am dedicated to finding solutions that will transform all of our schools into sources of community pride and places where students can learn and thrive. Fostering safe and inclusive learning environments: I believe in fostering a closer partnership with our community and neighboring school districts as we continue our journey towards equity. By working together, we can provide our students with the best opportunities for success and help them become adaptable and accepting global citizens in an ever-changing world. What would your approach be to district budget planning and spending? What would you do if your district had a budget shortfall? My approach focuses on ensuring that every dollar spent contributes to improving academic outcomes and enhancing the overall school experience for our students. In the event of budget shortfalls, my priority would be to consider cuts that would have the least impact on students. To make informed budgetary decisions, it is essential to engage with all district stakeholders and consider their unique perspectives. Listening to their insights and concerns will help identify areas that can be adjusted while minimizing the effect on our students. How should your school district raise student academic achievement, and what would you do as a school board member to accomplish that? There are several key initiatives we can undertake to raise student academic achievement. First and foremost, investing in our teachers is crucial. By providing ongoing training and the necessary tools, we can ensure that their skills remain current and effective. Additionally, it is important to have resources in place to quickly identify and support students who may be struggling. Timely intervention can make a significant difference in their academic progress. We also prioritize the use of data to recognize and respond to emerging trends. This data-driven approach allows us to make informed decisions that benefit our students. Lastly, I strongly encourage parents to be active partners in their children’s education. Parental engagement is a vital component of student success. Furthermore, fostering a positive and supportive school environment is essential for creating a space where students can thrive academically. Do you think anything currently offered in school curricula or libraries should be removed? If yes, what, and why? If no, why not? No. I believe that improved academic outcomes can be achieved when students see themselves reflected in the books they read and the curriculum they study. It’s also important for students to engage with age-appropriate stories about the diverse individuals in their communities. These opportunities enhance empathy and understanding, which are essential for creating inclusive environments where every student feels a sense of belonging. What do you think is driving student absenteeism in your district, and what would you as a school board member do to reduce it? One significant factor affecting absenteeism in our district is housing insecurity among some of our English as a second language (ESL) families. To address this issue, we have increased the number of community liaisons available to families; they play a crucial role in connecting with those at risk. Furthermore, our PTAs, in collaboration with district staff, have made a concerted effort to create more pathways for connecting with our ESL families. Do you think schools should notify parents if their child’s gender identity or presentation at school changes? Why or why not? No. I don’t believe schools should automatically notify parents if a child’s gender identity or presentation changes. The comfort and safety of the child should be the top priority. Many students may not be ready to discuss their identity with their parents due to fear of negative reactions or misunderstandings. They might still be exploring their feelings or feel pressured by family or cultural expectations, which can make it difficult to open up. Providing a supportive environment in schools allows students to express themselves without the added stress of parental notification. It’s essential that schools create a space where students feel safe and supported, empowering them to share their identities when they are ready. Ultimately, maintaining open lines of communication between the school and the student can help ensure their emotional well-being while respecting their personal journey.
