MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man was arrested on Saturday after Memphis Police say he fatally shot his ex-girlfriend outside of her apartment. Joshua Banks, 43, has been charged with second-degree murder for the incident that transpired early Thursday morning. Joshua Banks. (SCSO) At 12:17 a.m., officers responded to a shooting call in the University Garden Manor Apartments. When they arrived, they discovered a woman face down and unresponsive in the parking lot, suffering from several wounds. The victim was taken to Regional One in critical condition but was pronounced deceased at 12:53 a.m. by medical staff. Doctors described the wounds to the back of her head, left shoulder blade and left torso as being consistent with gunshots. As investigators processed the scene, they recovered 9mm spent cartridges as well as the victim's phone. A relative identified the victim and told officers that she had been dating Joshua Banks for approximately six months until September 26 when he allegedly stole $900 from the victim's account. The victim ended the relationship with Banks and forced him to move out. Two women critically injured in South Memphis shooting The relative told investigators that Banks said he would "kill the entire family except for the children," which left them in fear for their safety. According to the police report, an analysis of the victim's phone showed messages from Banks including one on the night of the homicide. In the message, he told her that he was on his way to give her the money back. A security guard on patrol saw a black Nissan Rogue at the location of the homicide just moments before hearing the gunshots and discovering the victim. Video recovered from the scene showed a black Nissan Rogue with three silver wheels and one black spare mounted at the passenger rear entering the complex and arriving at the scene at 12:07 a.m. At 12:13 a.m., the vehicle left the scene going southbound on Oakmont. Investigators received an anonymous tip that Banks was at his aunt's house where a 2012 Nissan Rogue was located. 1 dead in FBI-involved shooting in Hernando, MS Banks' aunt told officers that he had been staying with her for the past few days and was in possession of her Nissan Rogue for the purpose of going to work. Banks' workplace told investigators that he left the business unannounced between 9:00 and 9:15 p.m. on the night of the homicide and never returned. Video footage at Banks' aunt's house showed him leaving in the Rogue before the homicide and returning in the same vehicle at 12:49 a.m. Another relative of Banks told investigators that he's known to carry a silver and black 9mm handgun, the same caliber as the spent cartridges recovered on the scene. Banks also allegedly told the relative that he stole money from the victim and that he shot her, although he believed she was still alive.
