BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The summer has passed, and for some, the leap into a colder time brings plenty of new events and activities to take part in. However, many other people find themselves overwhelmed by the sudden change between seasons — a concept known as "fall fatigue." To delve deeper into this condition, Mission Connection Healthcare surveyed 3,000 individuals from across the United States, Through this poll, it was discovered that 31% of North Dakota residents are already feeling the effects of fall fatigue, especially its impact on lethargy and motivation. It should be noted, however, that low energy is not the only downside that comes with the feeling: 20% of survey respondents state the transition from summer to fall brings increased levels of stress and anxiety. To add to this difficulty, 10% of respondents also acknowledged that their focus and productivity decline during the season, as the change tends to disrupt routines, often throwing off the mental clarity that comes with a set schedule. This results in a feeling of general disconnection and a drop in concentration, making it more difficult for these individuals to stay focused and engaged in their day-to-day tasks. Weekend BRB: Oktoberfest comes early at Sertoma Park A major reason for this drop in motivation, as far as the study is concerned, has less to do with the fall itself than what comes before it. 38% of those who answered the survey stated that they often develop an immediate nostalgia for summer — with the season's sensory pleasures and lack of structure being primary causes, according to 14% and 15% of respondents. As a way of deterring the negative feelings that come with fall, experts recommend trying to find joy in seasonal activities — such as the changing foliage, and overall "cozier" attitude of the colder months. Other concepts like staying active, practicing mindfulness, and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can also help to ease the transition, thus mitigating the impact of seasonal fatigue. While fall fatigue is problematic enough on its own, it is important to remember that fatigue can occur at any time of year, and that there are plenty of ways to help one deal with the condition when it rears its head.
