Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK Where do the Detroit Lions have the biggest room for improvement? As the Detroit Lions’ bye week comes to an end after Sunday, we only have a few more opportunities to self-reflect on the first quarter of the season. Even with a bit of a slow start, the Lions are 3-1 and in good position to make the playoffs and challenge for a two-peat as NFC North champions. But, like with any other team, there’s always an opportunity to get better. The Lions are far from a perfect team, and even if they were, the goal should always be to improve. So today’s Question of the Day is: Where do the Lions need to improve the most? My answer: I think the Lions need improved play from their outside cornerbacks. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve actually been mostly encouraged by the play of Carlton Davis and Terrion Arnold, despite the ridiculous amount of flags on the duo through four games. I do think the flags will subside simply as a regression to the mean. I don’t think Detroit’s corners have been overly physical compared to other teams, and I think we will see that reflected in the officiating going forward. That said, both Davis and Arnold aren’t doing themselves any favors with their play. Both have done a good job being in the right position when the ball arrives, but both could do better in playing the actual ball instead of the receiver. You could certainly make the argument life has been tough for Davis and Arnold given their opponents thus far. Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, Marvin Harrison Jr., DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a gauntlet of receivers to face. But welcome to the NFL. Going up against a tough receiver is a weekly occurrence. Next week, Detroit goes up against CeeDee Lamb. The following week, it’s the Vikings and Justin Jefferson. Even the Titans have DeAndre Hopkins. I see weekly improvement from Arnold, and Davis has played solid football overall, so this isn’t a major concern necessarily. But at the same time, if this defense is going to take the step we’ve been anticipating for years, the duo will have to step their game up in the final three months of the season.
