A healthy, full head of hair is often referred to as a person’s crowning glory. However, through her work as a hair replacement specialist, Renae Miller is well aware that for those dealing with significant hair loss such is seldom the case. Miller, of Painesville Township, has been serving individuals experiencing thinning, alopecia and other types of hair loss conditions for more than two decades. She says that many of her clients at Complete Image in Mayfield Village display a vast swing of emotions throughout the replacement process, often starting out with little confidence and low self-esteem followed by expressions of joy after seeing their new, fuller hair look. Renae Miller works on a hair replacement piece at Complete Image, her business in Mayfield Village. (Jean Bonchak/For The News-Herald) Miller maintains that individuals seeking services follow a path of blind faith. “You’re telling people they’re going to have a full head of hair but they’re looking at how little they have now,” she said. Synthetic and natural hair used for replacements have vastly improved over the years. In the past, wigs, toppers and toupees often presented a helmet-like look, whereas today’s versions are significantly lighter and more natural looking. Standards and regulations pertaining to the use of hair to create products are strict. Sanitization, DNA removal and prohibiting the use of highly flammable materials are required. In many cases insurance companies cover part or full payment for “cranial prostheses,” a term used for wigs deemed medically necessary. This before and after picture shows the difference a replacement can make for a person dealing with significant hair loss. (Submitted) Miller began her career soon after high school, working as a cosmetologist at Ladies & Gentlemen Salon in Mentor where she says she learned the value of team building and sharing skills. Eventually developing a strong interest in helping those dealing with hair loss she went on to work at a hair replacement clinic. There she not only added specific skills but also learned various business elements which led to the opening of her own establishment. “I just feel like it’s my calling. I feel it’s what I’m meant to do,” she said. “I knew I enjoyed doing hair but I felt unfulfilled. When I realized I could help people feel really good about themselves it changed everything.” Making every effort to keep clients comfortable throughout what can be an emotional experience, all services are performed in a private room where concerns or challenges can be discussed. Patience and understanding are essential, Miller said, adding that “there’s no judgment here.” The process begins by assessing desired hairstyles, color, density and lifestyle to decide which replacement works best. “We want to enhance what they have, not change their whole look,” Miller said. Specific measurements are taken and considered crucially important in order for the hair system to sit properly. Lightweight breathable caps in complementary color tones allow for the best customization of the hairline area. Specially formulated medical adhesives permit pieces to be worn for extended periods of time, and allow for swimming, showering and other activities. Miller and her staff also provide services for those seeking breast prostheses after undergoing mastectomies. She’s pleased to note that her business draws patrons from surrounding states as well as Ohio, and credits the staff’s personable approach, detailed service and committed support system for its highly regarded reputation. She notes that the first step for those curious or looking for a breast or hair prostheses is to make an appointment for a free consultation. “We have the client’s best interest in mind,” she said, adding that the confidence gained through the right replacement can be life-changing. “Even when they feel sick they don’t look sick, so that’s what makes them feel better.” For more information, visit www.completeimage.org.
