MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Windy weather wasn't stopping one community from celebrating the fall season -- through Harvestfest in New Town. Event leaders say they wanted more opportunities for family to connect with others in the community. "It is a vendor show. It is also a place where you can come and make cookies, have fun, play games, take family pictures," said Harvestfest coordinator Gisele Carter. There was something for everyone at the festival. Kids could get their faces painted and play in the bounce house, and adults also had the opportunity to play games like Connect 4, Jenga, and axe-throwing. There was also a pumpkin-decorating contest as well as a soup fundraiser for the All Chiefs Society. But for people who attended, the possibilities for entertainment were endless. "I decided to come to the Harvestfest today for the home-baked goods and the jewelry and the amazing ribbon skirts they have for sale here," said Harvestfest attendee Cedar Henry. "It brings the community together, and I just like meeting our friends and buying all the goods. Just everything they have to offer," said Harvestfest attendee Nora Packineau. Harvestfest was originally started to combat food waste since farmers in the community had more produce than they knew what to do with. "We didn't want to see the produce go to waste, so they thought we'll start the Harvestfest based on the idea of the harvest share, so anybody that has extra produce can bring it in. Anyone that wants extra produce can take it home," said Carter. The produce was free to the public, and vendors also sold items like household goods, decor, and clothes. Carter says this was the first time Harvestfest had live music with Jesse Veeder, a country songwriter from North Dakota, performing.
