NEW YORK — Chase Goodwin threw for a touchdown and ran for another, Joey Giorgi rushed for 157 yards and Columbia beat Princeton 34-17 on Saturday for Jon Poppe’s first Ivy League head coaching victory. Columbia (2-1) won its Ivy League opener for the first time since 2017. Columbia trailed 10-6 at halftime before scoring on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter to take the lead for good. Goodwin’s rushing touchdown came on a fourth-and-5 play from the 14. He escaped an unmarked, blitzing defensive lineman and scrambled to the left side for his first career rushing score. Malcolm Terry II and Cole Freeman also scored rushing touchdowns as Columbia piled up 269 yards on the ground. The Lions entered the game as the Ivy League’s top rushing offense, averaging 185.5 yards per game. Goodwin was 19 of 30 for 210 yards passing and carried five times for 21 yards for Columbia. Edan Stagg caught six passes for 99 yards. Blaine Hipa was intercepted twice for Princeton (1-2) — both by Hayden McDonald. The first interception came with 4:57 left in the first quarter on a tipped pass near midfield. McDonald’s second saved a potential touchdown early in the second quarter when he made a sliding catch at the 1-yard line. Hipa also fumbled with 11:54 left in the third quarter and Charlie Newton recovered near midfield. John Volker had a team-high 13 carries for 61 yards and a score for the Tigers. AJ Barber caught seven passes for 74 yards and a score. TCNJ 20, Montclair State 13 EWING — Trevor Bopp threw for 234 yards and touchdown and the Lions (3-1, 1-0) held on to beat the Red Hawks (2-2, 0-1) in the NJAC opener. Bopp wasn’t his most efficient — just 17-for-40 and two interceptions — but he did connect with Thomas Burke for 125 of those yards and a score. The Lions defense sacked Montclair quarterback four times — two each by Jameson Sessan and Brandon Kuse — and picked him off once. Former Steinert kicker Greg Casimir booted a pair of field goals for the Red Hawks. Men’s Soccer Rider 2, Merrimack 1 NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — Theo Da Silva and Momo Diop both scored and the Broncs (7-4, 1-1) erased an early deficit to snap a two-game skid and beat the Warriors (1-9, 0-2) for their first points in MAAC play. Diop’s game winner was his sixth of the season and came in the 52nd minute. Women’s Soccer TCNJ 2, Montclair State 1 EWING — Victoria D’Imperio and Cassidy DiSabato scored and the 10th-ranked Lions (9-0-2, 3-0) held off the Red Hawks (3-4-5, 1-1-1) to remain unbeaten. Princeton 8, Brown 0 PRINCETON — Pietra Tordin had a second-half hat trick in her second game since returning from the U20 World Cup as the Tigers (7-3, 2-0) tallied seven second-half goals on their way to a victory over the Bears (4-3-3, 1-1) that gave coach Sean Driscoll his 100th career win. Rider 0, Sacred Heat 0 LAWRENCEVILLE — The Broncs (1-6-3, 0-3-2) have now failed to score in eight of their 10 games, although they managed a point against the Pioneers (1-8-3, 1-3-2) in MAAC play thanks to eight saves from goalkeeper Ellie Sciancalepore. Field Hockey TCNJ 6, Albright 0 READING, Pa. — Rayhanah Ahmed led the offense with four goals as the Lions (6-4) beat Albright (4-7) in non-league action.
