PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Fil Fest USA is celebrating its 10th Annual event in Portsmouth. The free two-day, event recognizes Filipino-American History Month. This year’s theme is innovation and technology. Saturday the event kicked off around 9 a.m. with Zumba and karaoke. Elected leaders including Rep. Bobby Scott stopped by to enjoy the family-friendly festivities. "It's beautiful, the weather is coming out our way, which is wonderful," said Naomi Estaris, Fil Fest USA Sponsorship Chair. "It is a culmination of people coming together through our food and then our entertainment." There are several food options for the Fil Fest rendition of 'Flavors of the Philippines' which include Alkaline, Kusina Filipino Cuisine, Lumpia & Company, Max’s Restaurant, Maymar Filipino Restaurant Chesapeake, Ray Ray’s at the Mayflower and Sunrise Breakfast Shoppe. The headliners of the event are JayR, known as the Philippines’ R&B King and JAGMAC, a pop band comprised of six siblings. Throughout the weekend, participants can sign up for the Annual Lumpia Eating Contest.  "One of our other big attractions is our lumpia eating contest. The winner gets their name on [the belt] here and the vendor who sponsors the Lumpia also goes on here," said Nestor 'NJ' Villanueva, Fil Fest USA Board member. Under the Children’s Tent is three-time Guinness world record holder, TikTok influencer and founder of Little Bricks Charity, Russell Cassevah.  This weekend Cassevah is debuting a Lego version of the "Jeepney." "After the war [World War II], a lot of Americans had left jeeps [in the Philippines] there and there were over 60,000 jeeps that were left throughout the islands. What they've done is repurpose and transform them into longer vehicles. Those became busses, what's called jeepneys in the Philippines and is a mode of transportation," said Estaris. Cassevah, who is based in Chesapeake is selling the Lego kits at the Fil Fest. He adds that for every kit that is sold, he will deliver one to a child admitted at the children's hospital, including Children's Hospital of The King's Daughter's (CHKD) in Norfolk.  "After you build the jeep, you separate it and then you extend it out and put it back together creating this awesome mode of transportation that is all over the Philippines," said Cassevah during a demonstration. "Just a week ago, we built 20 of these with 20 amazing kids at CHKD building big smiles on kids when they need it the most." Estaris, said this year the new generation planned the Fil Fest USA.  "We want to make sure our children know the history.  This is about history. It's about traditions, it's about culture and how to preserve that," said Estaris. Later in the day, Mayor Shannon Glover will recognize teachers from the Philippines teaching in the Portsmouth Public School systems through the Global Teacher Program. City leaders will also recognize Filipinos in the Coast Guard, both Retired and Active.  "We are recognizing those Filipinos that came abroad to help with education. Also, they help out in our hospitals. We have nurses and doctors that come abroad just to help, you know, fill those spots," said Villanueva. "We're also recognizing the retired and active-duty service members. Where we are in the City of Portsmouth, along the biggest waterway with the Naval hospital.
