INDIANAPOLIS – Areas of interest in the Indianapolis Colts’ Sunday meeting with the Jaguars in Jacksonville’s EverBank Stadium. The 0-4 Jaguars, by the way, are the NFL’s last remaining winless team. *Kickoff: 1 p.m. *Broadcast: CBS4 *Spread: Jaguars by 3. *History lesson, Part I: First, the good news. The Colts lead the overall series 27-19. Now the bad. They’ve lost eight straight in Jacksonville and the streak grows to nine on the road when you toss in the 2016 loss in London. Traveling overseas couldn’t even remedy things. Good luck coming up with a common denominator, other than the Jaguars always seem to be a difficult matchup. The nine-game road losing streak has spanned seven different starting quarterbacks, four head/interim coaches and two GMs. In case you had forgotten, the last Colts’ win in Jacksonville: 44-17 in 2014. Andrew Luck passed for 370 yards and four TDs, T.Y. Hilton and Reggie Wayne combined for nine receptions and 142 yards, and Ahmad Bradshaw and Trent Richardson combined for 132 yards on 23 attempts. Greg Toler and Vonte Davis came up with two interceptions of Chad Henne. Yes, it’s been a minute. *History lesson, Part II: E.J. Speed leapfrogged one Hall of Famer and is on the verge of bounding past another into a quasi-record book. The Colts’ sixth-year linebacker has piled up at least 10 tackles in eight straight games, tied with Zach Thomas for the longest streak since 1987, which is when the NFL began compiling that database. Speed broke a tie at seven with Ray Lewis (and C.J. Mosley) when he collected a team-high 13 tackles against Pittsburgh. Speed and safety Nick Cross led the league with 47 tackles. *History lesson, Part III: This one’s on the Jaguars. And Trevor Lawrence. The $275 million quarterback has lost nine straight starts: his final five in 2023 and four more this season. That’s the longest streak in the career of a player selected No. 1 overall in 2021. He lost eight straight during one stretch as a rookie. We realize there’s more to it than one player, but Lawrence is 20-34 as a starter. *Who’s the QB?: Shane Steichen leaned on gamesmanship this week when discussing Anthony Richardson’s status. And it was totally understandable. Why not force the Jaguars to spend time preparing for two disparate possibilities at quarterback? Richardson was limited all week in practices with a strained oblique, which meant 39-year-old Joe Flacco took the first-team reps for the first time. A bit of clarity was provided Saturday afternoon when the Colts downgraded Richardson and center Ryan Kelly (neck) to doubtful. That all but clinches Flacco making his first start for Indy. Steichen and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter most likely have known it would be Flacco for several days. The pass game should have opportunities with Michael Pittman Jr. Josh Downs and Alec Pierce. The Jaguars’ pass defense ranks No. 31 in yards per game (272.8) and No. 30 in yards per play (7.68). Opposing QBs share a 108.1 rating and have seven TDs against zero interceptions. Jacksonville will be without top corner Tyson Campbell, who’s on IR but might benefit from the return of end Josh Hines-Allen, who exited last week’s game with a concussion. *Backup backs: There’s no uncertainty with Jonathan Taylor. The NFL’s fifth-leading rusher with 349 yards (and four TDs, tied for second-most) is out with a sprained right ankle. Taylor was adamant the injury isn’t as severe as the one that required surgery in January 2023, but it’s debilitating enough to eliminate him from the mix for at least one game. That means the run game falls on the shoulders – or legs – of Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson. Through four games, they’ve been asked to do very little. Taylor has accounted for 72 of the 81 rushing attempts and 349 of the 373 yards by backs. The other nine attempts and 24 yards belong to Sermon. While Taylor has been on the field for 169 snaps, Sermon has handled 42 and Goodson 12. It’s worth noting the Colts are 6-8 without Taylor. In the most recent non-JT game that also included the loss of backup Zack Moss, Sermon rushed 17 times for 88 yards in the week 15 win over Pittsburgh last December. Goodson added 69 yards on 11 carries. The No. 1 back role is foreign to Sermon. In 29 career games, the fourth-year back out of Ohio State has handled more than 10 carries four times and posted more than 32 yards just twice. Jacksonville’s defense checks in at No. 30 in yards allowed (380.0) but is No. 10 in fewest rushing yards (107.3) and No. 6 in yards per attempt (3.9). The Flacco-led offense must have a semblance of balance and that falls on the running backs and one of the NFL’s top offensive lines. *Disrupt Lawrence: We’ve mentioned Lawrence’s extended failures, but there’s no denying the Colts routinely bring out the absolute best in him. He’s 4-2 against Indy in his brief career and has won four of the last five. Lawrence has completed at least 71.9% of his passes and compiled a 100+ passer rating with nine TDs and two interceptions in four of the last five. His recent malaise seems to be linked to a lack of accuracy. Lawrence is completing what would be a career-low 53.3% of his passes despite a supporting cast that includes Christian Kirk, free-agent acquisition Gabe Davis and rookie Brian Thomas. Thomas, the 23rd overall pick in the April draft, leads the Jaguars with 17 catches, 275 yards and two TDs. The Colts’ pass-rush package will be without Samson Ebukam, DeForest Buckner, Kwity Paye and Tyquan Lewis. That foursome combined for 30 sacks and 60 QB hits last season. That shifts the load to rookie Laiatu Latu, Dayo Odeyingbo, Genard Avery and Isaiah Land. Lawrence has been gettable: 12 sacks on 134 drop-backs. He’s been sacked 11 times in the past three games. Nickel corner Kenny Moore II will miss a second game with a hip injury and corner JuJu Brents is on IR. *And the winner is: Jaguars 20, Colts 17. Our gut says take the points and the Colts end their road travails. The Jaguars apparently are a mess. But at some point, the attrition gets to be too big of an obstacle to overcome. The Colts might be there. Also, while there’s no such thing as a decent 0-4 team, three of the Jaguars’ four losses have been by a total of 12 points. You can follow Mike Chappell on Twitter at @mchappell51.
