FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Due to a geomagnetic storm on the sun, there is still the potential that we could see the northern lights in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio Saturday night (October 5th). We assess the potential to see the northern lights by Kp index values, which are used to describe magnetic disturbances in near-Earth space. A higher value indicates the northern lights could be seen farther south. Here is a breakdown of the Kp Index. The Kp value for Saturday night is 7. At this value, viewing the northern lights is not a guarantee. Rather, it is the farthest south the northern lights can be seen at times when the northern lights are the most brightest. The energy from the sun impacts the Earth in pulses, so there will be times the lights are more vivid and other times they are more dim. Do not get too hyped though to see the lights, as this is all contingent on a coronal mass ejection (CME) impacting the Earth overnight. A later arrival or a CME that misses more of the Earth will result in a less impressive display or no show at all. The highest potential of viewing the northern lights in NE Indiana and NW Ohio comes when Kp index values range between 8 and 9. If you go out to take a look at the sky overnight, do not only try looking above you, try looking at the horizon, too. You are more likely to see colors there, especially if you are away from city lights. Use your phone camera and enable the long exposure setting to try to capture the aurora. We will keep you posted on what occurs and if Sunday night ends up having any northern lights viewing chances.
