BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- It was a tense morning at McFarland High School on Friday, after families were notified the school went on lockdown just before 11:30 a.m. "Saying that a man was inside the McFarland High School in a bathroom, loading an AR-15 about to start a school shooting," said McFarland Police Chief Brian Knox. McFarland, Delano and Wasco police closed the streets around the school for about an hour. Hall Ambulance, the Kern County Sheriff's Office and firefighters were also on scene to help. Some parents waited almost an hour until students were released. "There's a group that's making a lot of swatting calls throughout the nation. They sent out messages looking for people to do these swatting calls," said McFarland Police Chief Brian Knox. "No, we do not believe that it came from inside the school." Officials say events like this are extremely uncommon in the area. "These are very uncommon incidents that happen in our area. It's been quite some time since we've had something along these lines," said Aaron Resendez, Superintendent of McFarland Unified School District. A situation the school and its 1,000 students prepare for. "These type of drills, we do at least once a year," said Superintendent Aaron Resendez. "It does create a stress. We had all of our schools on lockdown. So, while we anticipated the threat, here at McFarland High School, our elementary schools and other grades were also put in precautionary lockdown." Many families faced the psychological consequences of these fake calls on Friday.
