Birdwatching enthusiasts and nature lovers are in for a treat this fall as New Jersey Conservation Foundation teams up with the Feminist Bird Club of Jersey City, Liberty State Park, and Jersey City Birds for a special “Big Sit” birding event. The event will be held on Saturday, October 12, from 8 a.m. to noon in Liberty State Park, and is free and open to both novice and experienced birdwatchers. People are welcome to drop in or leave at any time during the event.Participants will attempt to identify as many bird species as possible while staying within a 17-foot diameter circle. Bill Lynch, Director of Engagement and Communications for New Jersey Conservation, who is co-leading the event, explained, “No experience is necessary, and we’ll have a scope and extra binoculars for participants to borrow.”The “Big Sit,” a semi-competitive birding event first created by the New Haven Bird Club in 1992, is designed to encourage a more relaxed approach to birdwatching. Rather than moving from place to place, participants are invited to sit and observe, allowing for more conversation and connection with fellow birders. In addition to birdwatching, a nature journaling session for children and teens will begin at 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a sketchbook and art supplies to observe and document their surroundings, though extra supplies will be available for those who need them.New Jersey Conservation Foundation has been preserving land and protecting nature throughout the state since 1960, while the Feminist Bird Club, founded in New York City in 2016, promotes inclusivity in birding. Jersey City Birds, another partner in the event, works to promote awareness and protection of the city’s birdlife. While the event is free, advance registration is required.
