Mecklenburg County homeowners and renters who suffered uninsured damage or losses by Hurricane Helene can now apply for FEMA disaster assistance. FEMA has already been aiding 25 counties in western North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians with disaster assistance. On Saturday, officials announced Mecklenburg and Swain counties are now eligible for help. With FEMA disaster assistance, those affected by Helene can receive help with displacement, temporary lodging, basic home repair costs, personal property loss and more. To apply for disaster assistance, you will need: A current phone number where you can be contacted. Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying. Your Social Security number. A general list of damage and losses. Banking information if you choose direct deposit. If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name. Affected homeowners can apply online at disasterassitance.gov, on the FEMA App or by calling the toll-free number 800-621-3362.
