Our family is rewatching “Ted Lasso” (this time with our kids) and they’ve both been so inspired by Lasso’s upbeat humility, humor, positivity and yes, his desire to win. It’s fun to see the series of life lessons through their eyes, the least of which is you don’t have to be a screaming scary jerk to be an effective coach. After reading Lisa Wall’s editorial, “Old-school coaches need not apply,” I couldn’t help but think of Lasso and whether he would have made the cut in her definition of what makes a good coach. Is making scones for the owner of the club old school? Maybe. But I venture to guess the rest of Lasso’s style wouldn’t fit into the definition of what Wall’s old school ideal is. Sure, there’s room for old school, back in the day, before there were cell phones, social media, and an anxious generation. But old school also implies that humans don’t need to evolve, and I disagree with that idea. When we evolve, we can learn from the past. Using intimidation and creating a toxic environment is old school and it doesn’t work anymore, and ultimately it ends up looking like what has happened. A coach is being investigated and a community is in a major disagreement about it. We are better than this, people! My daughter plays volleyball at the club level with Apex, and her coach is tough and passionate about the sport. He expects players to be on time and show up ready to train and win. And he does it all without slurs, intimidation or discussing rape. She also plays soccer, and that coach expects the same. Are they both sometimes rough around the edges? Heck yeah! Do the athletes respect them? Heck yeah! Are voices raised? Hell yeah! And we win games, and we lose some too, and most days she comes home, inspired, exhausted and wanting to do better and in the end loving competition and sport. But there’s a place and a time for life lessons when it comes to bodily autonomy and discussing sexual assault, and the gymnasium isn’t it. Especially from a man to a group of impressionable young women. And if it’s acting like a princess to come home and tell your parent what happened, then I applaud all the princesses all day long.We all teach our kids to treat each other with respect and that no means no. And by the way, Ms. Wall, you have no idea if any of these girls who were talked to in that manner have been assaulted or abused. The idea that everyone is growing up in a perfect household is so old school, to use your phrase. Times are complicated and this subject matter is terrifying to many young women. We are so grateful for all the coaches who come here and want to make Park City and our teams better.Thank you, coaches! If there isn’t an International Coaching Day, we should create one, to honor all of them.I believe this community is better than Wall’s depiction of it. And I’m disappointed that she resorted to calling the young people of Park City names. As adults I believe we should do better.  I think Ted Lasso would agree.Andrea Buchanan Silver SpringsThe post What would Lasso do? appeared first on Park Record.
