The Pumas did exactly that, and more. Chaparral, ranked No. 3 in the Inland Empire and No. 24 in the state, returned two turnovers for touchdowns in the first half and bullied the Broncos on the way to a 55-28 victory, setting up an important showdown with No. 2-ranked Murrieta Valley at home Friday. Chaparral linebacker Logan Coleman leaped and intercepted Bryson Beaver’s pass on Vista Murrieta’s first play of the game and returned it 35 yards to ignite the Pumas’ defense. In the second quarter, two plays after Chaparral had taken a 21-14 lead, Pumas linebacker Corbin Frutos separated Broncos receiver Sean McCullough from the ball at the Broncos 15. Evan Redd scooped it up and scooted into the end zone and Chaparral never looked back. The Pumas built a 35-21 lead going into halftime and scored on their first three possessions of the second half to put the game out of reach for the Broncos (4-2). “Before the game, our linebacker coach (Mynor) Schult told us this was a game to make plays,” Coleman said. “I really took that to heart, and I just went out there and made plays.” The defensive effort sparked the offense as well. Chaparral rolled up 533 yards of offense, led by sophomore quarterback Dane Weber, who pinballed off a tackle for a 69-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Weber rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and completed 23 of 32 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown. Running back Jayce Venable ran for 132 yards and two scores on 21 carries. Kiko Farinas caught six passes for 76 yards, and Tycen Johnson had a magnificent 19-yard touchdown catch before halftime among his five receptions for 52 yards. Chaparral coach Andrew Ramer said it was crucial for the Pumas to establish control early in the contest. “We want to be the best team in Murrieta-Temecula,” Ramer said. “We have to get better. The next four weeks are going to be super-challenging. And if we want to make a run – we haven’t made it past the quarterfinals in my tenure – we have to continue to get better.” Weber said the Pumas (5-1) did some soul-searching after being humbled last week by Mission Viejo, the No. 10-ranked team in the nation. “It helped us out tremendously because it made us get back to work and get fully prepared for this one,” said Weber, who has thrown for 1,148 yards this season. “We got together and told ourselves we had two paths to go down: We could go down one path to get better, fully focused and put that behind us, or we could go down a path and let it get to us. We chose to take the higher path.” Vista Murrieta still packed plenty of firepower to keep the Pumas engaged. Beaver threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game with a knee injury midway through the third quarter. McCullough caught seven passes for 88 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown, and Riley Hauser had three catches for 68 yards and a score. Landon Potter, filling in at quarterback after Beaver’s injury, jolted the Pumas with a 61-yard sprint for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
