FONTANA — Colton football coach Ray Rodriguez and quarterback Koa Regalado think they have something special going on and want to show opposing Skyline League teams, their fans and followers of Inland Empire high school football. The Yellowjackets took advantage of Fontana miscues and turnovers to post a 26-19 victory in Friday night’s opening Skyline League game for both teams. It was the third straight victory for Colton (4-1), and all three have been by seven points or fewer. Fontana dropped to 3-3 overall. “I love my teammates and I feel this team is special,” Regalado said. “Come out and see us play.” The sophomore quarterback was successful with passing, but his biggest play was a 79-yard run with 42.6  seconds remaining in the first half to put Colton up by a 14-6 margin. “If there was one word to sum up this team, it is grit,” Rodriguez said. “We played a complete game. The biggest thing is that we played hard all four quarters and so long as we do that, I’m satisfied.” The wildfires in the area have upset practice schedules for many teams, and it has been particularly problematic for Colton. “We had to play a lot in the gym,” Regalado said. “You can’t get proper spacing and you run into walls.” Rodriguez said getting a text message from his athletic director determined how practice would be conducted. “We had one game canceled completely and we have had two where the times were changed,” Rodriguez said after Friday night’s game was delayed 40 minutes because of the subpar air quality. Fontana was unable to make a first down on the game’s opening possession. Colton was also forced to punt, but a kick was muffed and Ethan Moreno recovered at the Fontana 33-yard line. Regalado completed two passes in the three-play drive. The second was a 9-yard touchdown toss to Kalvin Leon, who caught three touchdown passes, giving Colton a 7-0 advantage. Fontana responded with a 14-play, 80-yard drive capped by Ruben Camacho’s two-yard scoring run. The Steelers were unable to make the two-point conversion with 10:20 remaining in the second quarter. Leon caught a 25-yard score 3:48 into the second half. His third touchdown reception came in the first 1:40 of the final quarter and went for 59 yards, lifting Colton to a 26-13 advantage. Rodriguez said he thought the game against Fontana was important because they are a strong team. “We never overlook any team in the Skyline League because it seems every team gets better every year,” he said.
