BEAUMONT — Evan Powell and DJ Littles were a dynamic duo for the Cajon football team Friday night. In the end, however, it was Jeremiah Duhu and Jayden Gober playing the roles of superheroes and coming to the rescue for Beaumont. Powell set career highs with 422 passing yards and five touchdown passes, and Littles gave his former school headaches throughout the night with nine catches for 212 yards and three touchdowns. That duo helped Cajon race to a 25-6 lead with 3:06 remaining in the first half. Beaumont (5-1 overall) gained some momentum going into halftime, however, as Trashawn James-Reek scored on a 1-yard run with 17 seconds left on the clock to trim the deficit to 25-12. The Cougars scored coming out of the break, as well, with Quillan Davis scoring on a 10-yard touchdown run. “We call that the 4 and 4. We did really well during the final 4 minutes of the first half and the first 4 minutes of the second half,” Beaumont coach Jeff Steinberg said. “We got 14 points there, and I think that really helped settle us down after a very rough start.” After a Cajon punt, Duhu tossed a 4-yard touchdown to Kainalu Johnston to give Beaumont a 26-25 lead midway through the third period. “We were very flat in the first half,” Duhu said. “We got ourselves back together at halftime and just kept that energy up until the end of the game.” Cajon (4-2 overall) had a response. Taylor Johnson dragged Duhu down near midfield for a 2-yard loss on a fourth-and-1 play. Jered Rennick’s diving catch in the end zone minutes later helped the Cowboys regain the lead (31-26) with 59 seconds left in third quarter. Beaumont’s defense made a critical stop on fourth down with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Cougars faced third-and-11 on the ensuing possession, but Duhu connected with Braedon Miller for a 53-yard touchdown that helped put Beaumont up 34-31 with 6:17 left on the clock. “Jeremiah is just a serious threat, whether throwing the ball or running with it,” Steinberg said. “He has a knack for making big plays in big moments.” Related Articles High School Sports | IE Varsity’s football wrap-up: Stories, scores and photos from Week 6 games High School Sports | Chaparral football sets tone early, tops Vista Murrieta High School Sports | Colton football feeling special after defeating Fontana High School Sports | Rancho Christian football starts strong, holds off Valley View comeback High School Sports | Aquinas football holds off Ontario Christian Cajon still had plenty of time for one final answer, and the Cowboys moved the ball down to the Beaumont 20 in the final minutes. But Gober chased down Powell for a 17-yard loss on second down, a sack that placed Cajon in a third-and 32 situation. B Birmingham hauled in a 12-yard pass on third down, but Powell’s fourth-down pass sailed well out of bounds. “It’s my first game of the year, so I’ve been waiting for a long time to be out here,” said Gober, who had to sit out the first five games of the season after transferring from Anaheim Canyon. “I was kind of lost on the play at first, but then I blitzed and got him.” Duhu scrambled for a 23-yard on the next play from scrimmage, and Beaumont was able to run out the remaining time on the clock. “We had some opportunities late but it just didn’t happen,” Cajon coach Nick Rogers said. “We’ll take this one on the chin and hope to get better.” Cajon scored touchdown on all four of its first-half possessions. Powell tossed a 6-yard touchdown to Rennick on the opening drive, and Powell later connected with Littles for touchdowns of 82, 29 and 31 yards. Powell completed 14 of 20 passes for 297 yards in the first half.
