Welcome to October, quotes readers! Political infighting over the city’s schools continued this week between Mayor Brandon Johnson, the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools, with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker even chiming in. The weekslong battle culminated Friday with the entire Chicago Board of Education submitting their resignations. Across the sea, the conflict in the Middle East escalated, with Israel launching a ground incursion into Lebanon and Iran firing dozens of missiles into Israel. In response to the broadening conflict, the U.S. announced it would be sending a “few thousand” troops to the region to boost security and help defend Israel. What else? Well, the Bears won, improving to a 2-2 record heading into Week 5, the baseball season came to a disappointing end for the city’s two teams, a former president turned 100, and two vice presidential candidates faced off in a largely tame and cordial debate. Early voting in the city got underway Thursday at two sites: The Chicago Board of Elections’ Super Site and the board’s offices. Registered Chicagoans can cast a ballot at any open voting site until 7 p.m. on Election Day, no matter where they live in the city. Now that you know the headlines, it’s time for the next installment of the Tribune’s Quotes of the Week quiz — this time with excerpts and utterances from the week spanning Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.
