ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Congressional lawmakers want to expand the free lunch program for kids. The new bill would make free meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack, available regardless of income. It would also expand access to free meals over the summer while eliminating school meal debt. The Rush-Henrietta School District is one of many across the state that offers free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack each day. Though, not every school has taken this on. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) joined local school leaders at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School Friday to talk about its benefits. "Here in New York, over 80% of students now have access to free school meals thanks to more than $130 million in funding included in las year's spending plans," Gillibrand announced. NYS advocacy groups call for fully funded school lunch programs in conceptual budget Governor Kathy Hochul has set aside $134 million toward free school lunches, but some advocacy groups have said it doesn't go far enough. Additionally, while the U.S. Department of Agriculture lowered the eligibility threshold for school districts to get federal funding for free meals, some districts are in a bit of a grey area, not quite fitting that requirement. Those behind this new bill claimed it will lead to better attendance rates and fewer behavioral incidents.
