FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – New restrictions are in place after the Happy Fire in eastern Fresno County grew to over 1,300 acres on Friday - after holding under 200 acres for almost two months, according to fire officials. According to the National Park Service, trail closures are now in effect for portions of Hotel Creek Trail and Lewis Creek Trail within Kings Canyon National Park. The restricted area is shown on the following map. The Happy Fire is currently burning dead and down-ground fuels from the 2015 Rough Fire about 10 miles northeast of Hume Lake. The USFS says smoke may be visible in Kings Canyon, Hume Lake, and Buck Rock Fire Lookout. According to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, the smoke is also negatively affecting air quality in the Central Valley. Air quality to deteriorate further in the Central Valley, here’s why The Happy Fire ignited on July 16 after lightning struck and is currently 1,346 acres large and 60% contained as of Friday morning, according to fire officials. The fire was reported at 24 acres as of Aug. 2, two and a half weeks after it started. Another two and a half weeks later, it had grown to 53 acres. The fire remained under 200 acres for about two months before it started growing at a more rapid pace in mid-September.
