SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - In the face of devastation from Hurricane Helene, one Savannah man rallied his community to raise donations for those suffering in Asheville, North Carolina. On Wednesday evening, David Powell posted to Facebook to let people know he was going to collect donations and supplies, load them into his van and drive them up to Asheville himself. "I didn't lose power for very long, and I was kind of happy about that at the beginning, and then I realized, 'Oh my gosh, everyone is hurting really bad, and I'm just sitting at home pretty comfortable,'" Powell said. That's what prompted his post and a whirlwind 48 hours. "I saw what's going on in Asheville, North Carolina, and Kentucky, and I just got tired of not doing anything," he said. Powell and his dog, armed with nothing but a van and a spare can of paint, got to work. "I thought if I can fill it with food and head up there, great," he said. Over the next day and a half, he went to several grocery stores in the area with his decked-out van to shop and collect donations, even putting in what he told me was a couple hundred dollars of his own money. Former Liberty County Sheriff candidate collecting Helene donations That's when even more people started to give. "I think people would do a lot. I think people are good. It's like, let's give people a chance to be good," Powell said. The main driving force behind his efforts, though, was a Christian Renewal Church, a local church on Hilton Head Island. They're partnering with a church in Asheville to bring donations of their own, but Powell told WSAV that they also donated $500 for his cause and gave him instructions on how to reach people in need. "They said they need baby formula and diapers and feminine hygiene products," he said. "You know, anything that you could think of that anybody would need if your whole house just blew up, washed away." Powell left Savannah Friday morning. Once he had almost reached Asheville, he bumped into a group that was also carrying donations to bring into the city. However, Powell said the group's transport had broken down. So, he offered to take the goods for them as well. Just before 5 p.m. Friday, he was finally able to unload everything with the volunteers at Rise Church in Asheville. If you would like to donate to Christian Renewal Church in Hilton Head, you can do that on their website.
