BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) - Farmers across the Southeast are evaluating the damage done to their crops after Helene. For Theron Anderson, his pecan orchards suffered major damage. The forceful wind wiping out his entire supply, some trees just a week away from being harvested. "It's heartbreaking," Anderson said. "You work to get these trees to this age where they just start really producing and making all the previous years' worth it. 15-Year-old trees. We'll have to start over." Anderson has put in hundreds of thousands of dollars and decades of back breaking hard work for his three orchards. He has two in Bulloch County, but his largest is in Odum, Georgia. Anderson said this is just the risk you take as a farmer during a natural disaster. "All you can do is wait. You can move your equipment to safer locations, but as far as the trees, there's nothing you can do," he said. And the pecans that are scattered on the ground weren't ready yet, so they aren't salvageable.Fortunately, Anderson said he has insurance and he's also hoping for some relief from the Farm Service Agency. Savannah couple survives near-death experience during Helene "I will overcome it. It will take years. But, that's what tree farmers do," he said. But this orchard also holds memories. Anderson's two sons, Lane and Pierce, his daughter, Kiely, and his wife, Ann, helped plant these trees. His family survived the storm unharmed, which is something he said he's most thankful for now. "There are people who lost their homes and family members," Anderson said. "As bad as I have it, I know there are people who have it a lot worse than me. I'm blessed." He said while there is a high risk in agriculture, there is also a high reward. "It is tough work, but it's very gratifying to be out here, enjoying what you do," Anderson said. In the coming days, Anderson will drive through the orchard on a tractor to collect all of those limbs and pile them up back here to be burned. As far as when he'll see another good crop, he said it could take years.
