SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) -- A South Dakota legislative study committee will hold its final meeting later this month about the future of Artificial Intelligence in the state. This comes after a representative from Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, threw support behind proposed legislation requiring age verifications before someone downloads content from an app store. Governor cuts off funding for pharmacists group You'll always find an electronic device within easy reach of local college students. But Lily Murphy, a student at USF, says kids are getting more savvy about exploiting what they can download on their devices. "I just talked to an eight year-old yesterday who has TikTok on his iPad and he has an app that he can cover the TikTok logo so his parents don't even know he has it," Murphy says. That's why some parents say more parental control over what their kids download is important. "I know for my daughter, specifically, I don't think she would ever download anything maliciously or anything bad on purpose. But, there is the potential if she knew how to log-in, she could download something that is bad for her, might scare her, you know, malware," Sioux Falls dad Tristen Jackson said. But some people feel that state government might be taking over the role of parents when requiring age verification for downloading apps. "I think each person has their own set of parents that kind of know their children the best and every child is different. Then again, it also might help," USF student Emily Pugach said. "While we don't want too much government overreach, I think that there's a growing, glaring picture that social media is not good for some youth and we need to put some bumpers around it," State Sen. Steve Kolbeck, (R) Brandon said. Republican Sen. Steve Kolbeck, who's a member of the legislature's AI committee, says adding an online age verification is a tool to help parents ensure their kids aren't downloading harmful content to their smartphones. Similar bills in other states have run into legal challenges. That's why Kolbeck says it's important to craft the proper language for a bill in South Dakota to ensure it will stand up in court.
