The crackdown aims to curb the rising crime associated with these establishments. "If you have an illegal gaming on your property and didn't get a warning, don't worry, it's just a matter of time," said Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan, sending a strong message that they're ramping up their crackdown on illegal game rooms. HPD says illegal game rooms down, as legislation aims to target landowners Armed with a newly passed state law, Act 249, that expands the definition of gambling activity, law enforcement targets game room operators and property owners who may turn a blind eye to the problem. "People who receive this notice they may be subject to asset forfeiture, they may be subject to nuisance abatement lawsuits but under the new Act 249, they may also be subject to felony prosecution," said James Beagle, Homeland Security Group Supervisor. Law enforcement said they've issued over 60 notices since July 2023 and another 60 a few weeks ago. Officials said they are seeing results. "With everyone's support, HPD was able to shut down more than 60 game rooms in just over a year. Half of Oahu is estimated 120 game rooms," said HPD Chief Joe Logan. This joint effort addresses what law enforcement described as the new era of crime hubs. These game rooms are the drug houses of years past. Could a vacant home tax end the housing crisis? "We had drug houses that were in neighborhoods and people were dealing drugs 24/7 out of their neighborhoods and then crime centered around that drug house," said Chief Logan. "These game rooms sometimes are being established in residential areas and then crime starts to happen around so it's a hub of crime." "These illegal game rooms are generating a lot of money. We're talking about approximately a million dollars a year and that's very conservative," said Lucia Cabral-DeArmas, Homeland Security Acting Special Agent. Neighbors living near a recently raided apartment complex on Pawaa Lane who wanted to stay anonymous said they know all too well the danger these game rooms can bring and were happy to hear something was being done. "You would hear yelling, screaming," said the neighbor. "You know we gotta stay inside our homes we don't want to go outside because of all the riff-raff outside. Every day I hope somebody comes by and says they're gonna shut it down they're gonna do something. because it's just too uncomfortable now."
