(WITN22) — The Wilmington Public Library was filled with joy and laughter on Friday night as a sold-out crowd gathered for “Fellas Night Out,” featuring three of Black Hollywood’s most iconic talents: Robert Townsend, Larenz Tate, and Ben Vereen. Although actor Ernie Hudson was slated to attend, unforeseen circumstances prevented his appearance, leaving the evening to be carried by Townsend, Tate, and Vereen, who captivated the audience with stories of their legendary careers. The 55-minute event offered a glimpse into the personal and professional lives of the three actors, with each sharing reflections on past projects, challenges, and the importance of continuing to tell Black stories. He announced that he directed the upcoming season finale of Power Book IV: Force (Episode 10), teasing that fans of the show will be in for “a real treat.” He also spoke about his involvement in the critically acclaimed Hulu series The Bear, where he directed several episodes. Townsend, who gained recognition in the 1980s for his groundbreaking comedy Hollywood Shuffle and the superhero film The Meteor Man, continues to leave his mark both in front of and behind the camera. Tate reflected on the spiritual connection he feels when stepping into these roles, noting that he “depends on the Most High, the divine spirit” to guide him. Preparing to play Frankie Lymon in the biopic Why Do Fools Fall in Love required watching old films of the legendary singer to capture his essence, Tate explained. Tate’s ability to bring depth and authenticity to complex characters has made him one of the most respected actors of his generation, with his current role in Power continuing to keep audiences engaged. Vereen plays Isham Worthy, a character deeply connected to the history of the abolitionist movement. He emphasized the importance of preserving and telling Black stories, drawing a comparison to the Jewish community’s commitment to honoring the memory of the Holocaust. “We must continue to tell our stories,” Vereen urged the audience. “Our brothers and sisters of the Jewish community continue to tell their stories, so we must tell our holocaust.” Vereen is celebrated for his versatile performances, from his Tony Award-winning role in Pippin to his memorable work in Roots and All That Jazz. His enduring passion for storytelling and activism remains a hallmark of his career.
