Mentor football coach Matt Gray raves of the maturity of his senior quarterback Scotty Fox. Fox’s productivity is pretty darn good. Fox threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Mentor drubbed Shaker Heights, 45-6, in a Greater Cleveland Conference road game Oct. 4. Fox threw scoring passes of 56 and 20 yards to junior Justen Hodge, and also connected with Dominic Burns on a 37-yard scoring strike. Add it to his 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and it was a pretty productive night for the West Virginia University commit. “He’s having a great year,” Gray said. “He put in so much time and work into it. I’m extremely pleased with the way he’s grown and developed as a young man and football player. We hold him to the highest of standards. I’m proud of him.” Mentor (7-0) entered the game as the top-ranked Division I team in the state per the Associated Press poll and the No. 1 team in the Division I, Region 1 computer ratings. The win over Shaker Heights (2-5) will do nothing to change that. Mentor led, 10-0, in the first quarter via Dylan Tackett’s 32-yard field goal and the Fox-to-Hodge 56-yard strike. Even though Shaker cut the margin to 10-6, Jackson Farley scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground, sandwiched around Fox’s short scoring run, to make it 31-6 at the half. If the game wasn’t out of reach at that point for the host Raiders, it was early in the third when Marcus Sierputowski returned a kickoff into Shaker territory. Fox then hit Hodge for another score and a 38-6 lead. A Fox-to-Burns connection late in the third iced it for the Cardinals. Gray said he was happy with the way his team played, including the defense. The six points Mentor surrendered are the fewest since the 36-13 win over Massillon Jackson in the season opener. “We’ve gotten more physical at the point of attack,” Gray said. “Our guys are playing extremely hard. Our defense is aggressive and is setting the tone for us.” Mentor travels to Brunswick in Week 8. “The guys are doing a great job at this point,” Gray said of his undefeated team. “I’m proud of where we are at this point.” • Geneva improved to 6-1 with a 75-6 demolition of Conneaut in CVC Lake Division play. Bryce Peet and Diemer each had interceptions returned for touchdowns as the Eagles took a 68-0 lead into the locker room at halftime and cruised from there. • Jacob Kay ran for 212 yards and threw for 125 as Chagrin Falls went on the road and beat Fairview, 39-22, in CVC Valley Division action.
