Walter Moses needed to wait a little longer than he wanted to in order to set the all-time passing record in Perry’s CVC Chagrin matchup with Orange on Oct. 4. He had a 41-yard touchdown pass to Luke Sivon called back due to a holding penalty on the opening drive and the second drive had Carter Hopkins break off a 65-yard score. But on the Pirates’ third drive, Moses found Sivon open in the middle of the field for an 80-yard touchdown that broke the record as part of Perry’s 62-0 victory over the Lions. Moses broke the record set by Drew Schiano, with 6,054 yards. Moses came into the 47 yards short of the record and finished with 232 yards. Now with his name etched into the Perry record books, Moses is honored to be the one who is now the standard when it comes to playing quarterback for the Pirates. “Drew was pretty much my idol when I was younger,” Moses said. “I loved watching him play football, and it was great to watch him grow and have him be like a brother figure to me growing up. It’s a good accomplishment for me, but it’s also a group accomplishment. I couldn’t have done it without the receivers all four years, the line, and it’s one for the team.” Perry (6-1) scored on seven of its eight drives in the first half. Dare’On Howard scored on the opening drive after the touchdown was called back with a 41-yard spurt to the outside. Hopkins had the aforementioned 65-yard scamper on the second drive. But then on the third drive, after two plays that went for a loss, Moses found Sivon for the score. While setting the record was a nice moment for him, Moses was thrilled to get to share it with a fellow senior in Sivon who he’s known his entire life. “Luke, Owen, all the seniors here grew up together,” Moses said. “To be able to break it with Luke is extra special. We’ve been doing it for so long together that to have it be with him makes the moment mean a little more.” Moses is also five touchdown passes away to catch Schiano’s record for that. But the fireworks didn’t stop there, as Moses had a second touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to Trent Taylor from 17 yards out. While Moses finished the game 8-for-13 for 232 yards and three scores, Perry also had a strong night on the ground as well. Both Howard and Hopkins had rushing scores but Owen McKoon wouldn’t be outshined either. After two penalties, Perry was at its own 10-yard line and McKoon took the handoff, found a hole and was gone for the score. The trio of running backs finished with a combined 12 carries for 268 yards. “I think our team did a really good job of attacking and taking what was there,” Perry coach Bob Gecewich said. “We challenged them a little bit this week and our guys definitely stepped up and I think we’re getting closer and closer to playing to our standard. Regardless of what happens on the play and the places to see that is in the run game and on defense.” The last two touchdowns of the first half were a second Moses-to-Sivon connection, this time from 31 yards out and a second rushing score from Hopkins, from three yards out. The latter was set up by a Sivon interception. Perry created four turnovers, two by Brody Krantz in the second half, along with two turnover on downs. While the Pirates did have a plethora of penalties, one of which was on an Armani Chiappone interception that was returned for a touchdown, Gecewich isn’t mad about the extra laundry at times. “We’ll take those aggressive penalties,” Gecewich said. “I have zero problems with a pass interference call if we’re trying to jump it and being aggressive. That’s great. You don’t want to trail that back from a kid. Our defense has been very good all four seasons I’ve been here, and I can’t praise the coaching staff or players enough.” Perry’s second half touchdowns came from Xavier Jackson on a 16-yard run and Carter Crofoot with a 3-yard score. The Pirates have their final regular season road game on tap with a trip to Harvey on Oct. 11. THE SCORE Perry 62, Orange 0
