WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) said a Virginia man was arrested Friday morning for spray-painting the monument at Columbus Circle in front of D.C.'s Union Station during a protest in support of Palestine in July. Zaid Mohammed Mahdawi, 26, was charged with destruction of government property. On July 24, several groups applied for and were granted permits to demonstrate on the National Mall, according to court documents. An organization was granted a sole permit for the Columbus Circle area. Despite this, demonstrators stayed in and around Columbus Circle until about 5 p.m., during which individuals "pulled down flag affixed to flagpoles; burned flags and objects; interfered with law enforcement's ability to place individuals under arrest; and sprayed graffiti on multiple statues and structures," according to court documents. Between 3:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m., officials said Mahdawi climbed the monument in the center of Columbus Circle and wrapped a piece of green clothing around his neck and nose, concealing part of his face. He then used red spray paint to write "HAMAS IS COMIN" across the side of the monument. A few days after the demonstration, the National Park Service (NPS) issued a USPP bulletin seeking information on five people who "engaged in criminal activity." One picture in the bulletin included Mahdawi on top of a monument. The FBI was able to identify him after receiving tips from several witnesses. The USAO noted in a news release that the flags pulled down from the flag poles and the statues and structures in Columbus Circle are the property of the federal government. NPS estimated the cost to clean and repair the site was about $11,282.23.
