ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — If you're on social media in Monroe County and beyond, you've likely seen an increase in photos from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and others, asking for help to identify a person of interest in a possible crime. In the past six months, the MCSO has been posting photos of people related to various crimes it is investigating. Deputy Brendan Hurley said Friday that social media is a good tool, and this follows a nationwide trend of law enforcement crowd-sourcing. Hurley says that retail theft of petty larceny and repeat offender arrests of the same are going up, and that any tool can be helpful. Hurley explains that most commonly, MCSO gets a call from a big box store of a possible theft to their retail theft task force. MCSO investigates first, but: "We do our best to not shame anybody… It's absolutely that we've done our best to ID these folks, and we just need a little bit of extra help to get to the next level," he said. "That next level could be clearing somebody or they're accused." In the past 6 months, Hurley says MCSO has put up about 200 posts, leading to 88 successful IDs. Hurley says someone giving a tip doesn't need to give the person of interest's full name; any tip or lead can be helpful. "These have been a great success for us, and most of that, like everything is just not just us," he said. "It's the community… We need the community's help as a whole to fight crime and curb theft." If you are working at one of these stores and a possible crime is taking place, Hurley says you should focus on being the best witness you can be: don't intervene, call 911. If you want to send an anonymous tip, Hurley says you can email [email protected].
