McKay High School was locked down Friday morning following a report of a student with a firearm, but police found no gun after investigating. Police were called to the school at 10:20 a.m. after students reported to school staff that a student “had made threatening statements and may have been in possession of a firearm,” a message sent to McKay families said. The report initially prompted the school’s highest-level lockdown, condition 3, where students barricade themselves in classrooms. Students and educators spent about 10 minutes barricading before the lockdown was downgraded. The call reported a student with “what appeared to be a firearm,” police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said. Officers responded and detained a 14-year-old boy who did not have a firearm. Hedrick said officers were still on scene gathering information late Friday morning. The school notified parents of a lockdown at 10:25 a.m. via an alert on the Salem-Keizer School District’s app. Ten minutes later, the lockdown was downgraded, typically meaning classes can continue while the building remains locked and closed to visitors. The lockdown was lifted at 10:50 a.m., district spokesman Aaron Harada said. The incident comes one week after West Salem High School was locked down following a report of a student with a gun outside. Two teen boys are facing theft and unlawful possession of a firearm charges in connection with that lockdown. Ardeshir Tabrizian contributed reporting.
