Malik Nabers is trending in the right direction. He’s just not trending quite fast enough. Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced that the team’s star rookie wide receiver won’t travel to Sunday’s game against the Seahawks in Seattle because he’s still in the concussion protocol. “He’s made progress, but not to the point where he can go out there and play,” Daboll told reporters on Friday. “His safety, his well-being is first and foremost.” The NFL has a five-phase concussion protocol that players must pass before returning to action. Daboll confirmed that Nabers has “done some stuff with the trainers” when asked if Nabers had done any physical activity, which indicates that he’s either in phase 2 (aerobic exercise), phase 3 (football-specific exercise) or phase 4 (club-based non-contact training drills). The final phase is “full football activity / clearance” in which both the club physician and an independent neurological consultant clear the player for return to game action. “Each day it’s getting a little bit better, but just not at the point where he can take the next step in the protocol for us,” Daboll said. “Again, you don’t want to force anything like that. You want to make sure that all the steps are very careful in that regards to concussions. So, he’s better. He’s getting better. He’s in the meetings, things like that. He’s doing some stuff with the trainers inside, and each day it’s been a little bit more.” The No. 6 overall draft pick from LSU is obviously a huge component of the Giants’ offense to replace considering he has accounted for 43.8 percent of the team’s receiving yards and 38.5 percent of the receptions. He has a league-high 52 targets — nine more than the second-highest player, Houston’s Nico Collins. Wan’Dale Robinson (194 receiving yards, one touchdown) and Darius Slayton (122 receiving yards) are in line for expanded roles. Jalin Hyatt, who has played only 19 percent of the offense’s this season as the fourth receiver, will likely also play more as a vertical deep threat especially. Daboll said the team was set to discuss the practice squad and the possibility of elevating a veteran like Isaiah Hodgins, who has been in the system since 2022 and recorded 581 receiving yards with seven touchdowns in the past two seasons. Starting running back Devin Singletary (groin) is doubtful for Sunday after getting limited work in practice on Friday. It presents significant hurdles for the Giants to overcome if they are to score enough points to upset the Seahawks as seven-point underdogs. “That’s why we have the other guys on the roster,” Daboll said. “Obviously, Malik is a talented player. Motor’s (Singletary) done a lot for us, but that’s the NFL. Every team deals with injuries, and you prepare the other guys that are backups to them to go out there and perform at a high level. So, we have a lot of confidence in the guys that are behind them, and that’s just an opportunity for them to go out there and to play at a high level.”
