BOSTON (WWLP) - This week at the State House in Boston, lawmakers attended awareness days, celebrations, and swearing-in ceremonies. After facing opposition from the NRA and similar groups, Governor Healey moved to immediately enact a new gun law this week. This blocks opponent groups from filing a ballot question and putting the law on hold until voters can weigh in, which would be in the 2026 elections. On Friday, the new Massachusetts State Police leader was sworn in. He shared his goals for the force's work environment.  "A healthy organization is one in which the men and women who serve in that department in any capacity feel that they belong, feel that they are supported, feel that they can come and work in an agency regardless of their background and experience," said Geoffrey Noble, the new lieutenant colonel. "Once they become, in this case, a Massachusetts State Trooper, they've earned that right." The State House saw an event raising awareness about breast cancer and organizations that provide support throughout the treatment and recovery process on Wednesday. "There is a significant financial toxicity associated with breast cancer. There is an emotional toxicity," said Meredith Mendelson, the executive director of the Ellie Fund, an organization that provides support to breast cancer patients. "It is a very difficult disease to navigate whether you have a meal train on your block, or whether you live alone and are going through this by yourself." Also this week, western Massachusetts Senator John Velis was appointed to a commission to address antisemitism. The State House schedule will stay this packed through election season, and 22News will have continued coverage on weeknights and right here on wwlp.com.
