TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) – An American flag flying atop a large piece of driftwood would welcome you on your drive to Tybee Island. Locals say Nestor Gernay has maintained it ever since 9/11 and kept the flag flying during storms. But after Hurricane Helene, the local landmark on Highway 80 is nowhere to be found. It seems Helene stripped the flag from its perch and pushed the driftwood far out into the marsh. It's rumored that two men cut the driftwood with a chainsaw and took it away in a pickup truck. News 3 checked in with the city of Tybee and Chatham County, and it wasn't their doing. Comments poured in on social media, some hoping that a new piece of driftwood could be brought in for it. In the meantime, Gernay's family said he is going to see if there is another location where he can display the flag.
