As Park City High School clubs begin and students ease into the year, PCHS Writes, a newly formed club, will welcome writers to dive into the world of creative writing. The main goal is to inspire more students to write and to write from their heart instead of strictly within the walls of their required English class. In the past, PCHS offered a variety of English classes such as Dystopian Novels, Short Fiction, Literature of Sports and Society, and Literature for Business and STEM.These classes were discontinued for a variety of reasons: colleges struggling to acknowledge these courses as core classes rather than electives and scheduling challenges. So, the English department returned to the standard curriculum. The absence  of these classes shouldn’t lead to the loss of the student body’s interest in exploring their skills and  imagination in the world of writing. However, it seems that it has. Many students view writing as school work rather than a hobby they may thoroughly enjoy. They only view writing through the lens of an English class, which can be limiting for students.A club can’t change the courses offered, but it can offer something new. In PCHS Writes, students can write freely without the pressure of a final grade on a transcript. The challenge of this club was that in order to catch the eyes of busy high schoolers there is one main ingredient required- an incentive. In this case, the incentive or reward for practicing creative writing each month and submitting new stories is not only be a published spot on the club website but the shining opportunity to be featured in The Park Record. Each month, PCHS Writes will host a short story competition. On the first of every month, there will be different prompts released with the deadline being the end of the month. There is no fee to submit, and all Park City High School students, including ninth graders, are eligible to submit. The club board will select a winning story of those submitted, and this story will be published in the newspaper. Students will have their work shown off on a professional platform, and it would provide another accomplishment for their college applications. With students’ eyes on the prize, they will also be able to improve their writing abilities and devote more time to the craft. And they can fall in love with writing and literature simply by printing their name on a club sign-up sheet. This feature in The Park Record will also help build community by including more teenagers in local organizations.Readers can see the amazing minds and imaginations of the Park City High School students that the administration, teachers and student body strive to highlight. The Park Record is pleased to host Park City’s first student writing contest in collaboration with PCHS Writes, Park City High School’s creative writing club. The first winning story will be published in the first week of November, so be sure to check it out.For information about PCHS Writes, email [email protected] post Park Record partners with a Park City High School Club appeared first on Park Record.
