by Anonymous Two issues play a big role in deciding who I’ll vote for in the Portland election. One, I’m against indiscriminate, random sweeps of “unsanctioned” camps: throwing possessions away, being carried out regardless of weather extremes, etc. Such sweeps treat all homeless as bad actors, even though our expensive housing market plays a big role in putting more on the street. Are we going to crowd or expand our jails further so that we can put the homeless there? I doubt that our county jail has adequate addictions treatment, social work services, or mental health help to benefit such individuals. I’ll definitely oppose Rene for mayor, I’ll oppose Mariah and Nabil for district 2 city commissioners, and I will not support Sam Adams for the county seat. Charles Dickens, during the Victorian era, opposed the injustice of debtor imprisonment; our current city policy is much the same. My second big issue is Zenith, associated with the NW Ptld tank farm and oil trains: a big derailment and/or earthquake could poison the air and water and destroy part of town. My candidate(s) must oppose Zenith, and revoke the sweetheart, backroom deal that our current Council put in place. Let’s truly help the homeless and deal and begin addressing the oil explosion risk now.
