MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis man accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend Anthonese Stewart, and her father Gary Newman faced a judge Friday.
For now, 28-year-old Jaylan McCollins, will remain in lockup without having a bond set. McCollins is facing two first degree murder charges.
Friday's hearing with Judge Greg Gilbert was supposed to be a bond and preliminary hearing, which is when the court decides if there's enough evidence to move forward.
But McCollins' newly hired attorney, Jason Balestrini, told the judge they were waiving his client's rights. He said he believes it's in McCollins' best interest but it leaves the 28-year-old in custody with no bond.
Man wanted for double homicide in Shelby County arrested
Police McCollins was seen on security camera back in July fighting at the home of his ex -girlfriend Anthonese Stewart.
The fight turned fatal. McCollins allegedly shot Stewart before turning the gun on Stewart's father, Gary Newman when he tried stepping in to help his daughter, detectives said.
The judge bound the case over to the grand jury and wished McCollins good luck.
The next court date has not been scheduled.
