MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three former Memphis police officers were convicted Thursday of obstruction in the beating death of Tyre Nichols, and one also convicted on two bodily injury charges. It calls into question the training Memphis Police go through, as expert witnesses testified about the use of force techniques and how officers are trained. Verdicts announced in Tyre Nichols federal trial; ex-officers taken into custody The defense saying former officers Tadarrius Bean, Justin Smith and Demetrius Haley were only doing what they were taught by the Memphis Police Department when they encountered Tyre Nichols the night of January 7, 2023.Tyre's family and their attorneys see it differently."The violation of Tyre Nichols' civil rights led to his death. And the blood is on the hands of the Memphis Police Department," said the family's attorney Ben Crump. It has put the spotlight on MPD training. Retired Sheriff's Office Captain Bennie Cobb  trained many law enforcement officers. He says training isn't the problem. "In spite of all the training you had human element. You have to have these officers with a conscience and understanding that this is wrong, I need to intervene. I need to do something different," Cobb said. But he says this case will lead to plenty of scrutiny. The video of the beating revealing, police using blows to the head, kicks to the body. From what we heard during the testimony, those are tactics that officers use.   "Well, of course you can use those tactics," Cobb responded. "They are necessary, they are validated in some situations. There was no place for those tactics in this particular situation." Tennnessee State Rep G.A. Hardaway is already drawing up legislation to look at law enforcement training and even body cameras. "The body cams, the way that they come on automatically. Whether they should record when you pull your holster or when you pull your pepper spray or your taser," Hardaway said. Cobb said there are rules and regulations already for body cams. "You're dealing with the human element. You're dealing with somebody, a group of officers that chose to take the law into their own hands and disable the body. Cams, take them off, or whatever. What has to happen in in those situations is, examples have to be set," Cobb said.
