WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — Some people in West Memphis and Crittenden County, Arkansas are making claims of voter suppression after the election commission's decision to move early voting out of the county's largest city amounts to voter suppression. The debate over early voting and where to have it in Crittenden County is now in the hands of the state Supreme Court. "This issue is not a Republican or Democrat issue, this is an issue about allowing a free and fair election," said said Mike Ford, chairman of the Democratic Party of Crittenden County.  The Crittenden County Election Commission recently decided not to have an early voting location in West Memphis this year and instead have that location moved to the town of Marion. "It's a travesty because this is the greatest form of voter suppression," West Memphis Mayor Marco McLendon said. "I never thought in 2024 I'd be fighting the same battles my grandparents fought in the '50s and the '60s." As a result two West Memphis women filed a lawsuit over the lack of early voting locations in the county's largest city. "Anytime we remove early voting or any kind of voting access for that many people, it deserves transparency and oversight," said Jennifer Standerfer, the plaintiffs attorney.  A circuit court judge ruled to have early voting at the Seventh Street Church of Christ in West Memphis. "We're having this vote, then I'm going to explain where we're going to go after this," Barton said during the meeting, as the crowd cried, "No, no, hell no."  About two years ago, the First Baptist Church in West Memphis served as the early voting site. This year, some commissioners agreed to have early voting at the West Memphis Library, but apparently that location was insufficient due to traffic and parking. And now, the final decision on early voting will be made by the Arkansas Supreme Court.       Project Pat says he’s no pastor, but he is preaching Early voting is set to start on Oct. 21 at the Seventh Street Church of Christ in West Memphis.Of course, we'll let you know if that changes.
