GREENFIELD, Ind. - Hoosier pilots and airplane owners are banding together to help out victims of Hurricane Helene. Bailey Purvis knew she had to help out the second she heard about Helene. Hoosiers contributing to Hurricane Helene relief efforts “We had gotten word on Sunday evening that they needed planes or pilots or both," Purvis. Purvis and her fiancé own an airplane at Indianapolis Regional Airport in Greenfield so they decided to get other local pilots together, to team up with the civilian crisis response team to launch "Operation Fill a Plane." Since she came up with the idea Tuesday, Purvis said they have received dozens of donations ranging from peanut butter and crackers to diapers. The donations will go to North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, some of the areas hardest hit by Helene. “There’s two tiny airports that they are flying into and then from there, they are getting bussed over. Helicopters are picking them up and actually dropping them off in people's front yards or as close as we can get them," said Purvis. Lynda Dintaman heard about the homegrown operation and wanted to help. She and a friend donated nonperishable food items and bagels. “I looked at TV the other night and saw the news I saw the devastation and I just thought, 'Oh my gosh, we have got to get them food, we have got to get them help,'" said Dintamin. Purvis said so far they have sent out three planes full of donations. Purvis said her efforts aren't over as she plans to host another donation drop-off this weekend and another next week on Thursday. She just hopes those hit by Helene can feel the love of Hoosier hospitality. “It’s important to come together as a community to know that our community has each other's back whether you are in North Carolina or Florida," said Purvis. "I think that right now is such a critical time for all of us to step up and help each other.” The group is taking donations at the airport of nonperishable food items and toiletries on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. until noon.  Lawmaker on Helene conspiracy theories: ‘PLEASE help stop this junk’ Just head to the Indianapolis Regional Airport at 3867 N. Aviation Way, Greenfield Indiana to donate. Purvis said they will have another drive next week.  Purvis said they need the following items: Granola bars Tuna/chicken packets (or cans) Baby food Can openers Razors Hair brushes Packaged snacks Plastic bowls Plastic knives Instant coffee Coffee cups
