GREEN BAY, WI (WFRV) - When the Packers and other Wisconsin sports teams announced sponsoring another "Flight of Champions" for Veterans, Oostburg's David Termaat was asked to be a keynote speaker. He later told Local 5 News that his road to taking flight was a long one and long overdue. Army Veteran Jim Strong of Appleton wants all Veterans to feel welcomed Now he wishes other Veterans would follow suit and fly back to Washington D.C. to see the monuments in their honor. " I signed up in high school in March of my senior year," he recalled. "At that time, you either went to college signed up to military, or got drafted. So, I stayed ahead of the draft when I signed up." Termaat served on a ship on the East Coast during the Vietnam War but still felt rejected by society because of the controversy over the war when he finished. "When I returned from the Navy, we took our uniforms off as fast as we could. Nobody had anything good to say to us." He says taking the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight helped him come to terms with his service. "I was not in the fighting but the experience and the emotion of the flight were just as important I felt. I wasn't in Vietnam and that's why I felt that flight wasn't for me." He said fellow Veterans and others kept encouraging him to take the flight. He has no regrets other than maybe waiting so long. Local vet group honors Vietnam War POW/MIA’s "I'm so happy I attended the flight," he shared. "Sign up. Get on board. I can't say enough good things about it. I've received more thank yous in the last two years than I ever received in the last 50 years." The "Flight of Champions" Honor Flight sponsored by the Green Bay Packers arrives home tomorrow night. Supporters are asked to gather at Austin Straubel International Airport around 7 pm. The veterans should touch down no later than 9 pm. All are invited to welcome them home.
