EXELAND, Wis. (WFRV) - A 42-year-old Wisconsin man was flown to a nearby hospital after a standoff that started on Thursday evening ended with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Friday morning. According to a release, on Oct. 3, 2024, at around 6:45 p.m., the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance call involving a firearm in Exeland. Manitowoc man arrested for cocaine distribution as result of two-month joint investigation Upon further investigation, it was learned that the suspect, Jason Arnold, 42, had an active felony warrant and was in violation of being a felon in possession of a firearm. A search warrant was obtained to locate and investigate the complaint at Arnold's residence. Due to the severity of this incident and Arnold's history with law enforcement personnel, SWAT teams from multiple agencies were requested and responded to the scene. Negotiations were attempted and continued for several hours. At 11:20 p.m., chemical munitions were deployed into Arnold's residence. Around 40 minutes later, Arnold shot at the armored SWAT vehicles occupied by law enforcement. There was no gunfire exchanged by law enforcement. Negotiations continued well into the night and early morning, and chemical munitions were deployed in his residence again shortly before 5:00 a.m. Arnold exited his residence with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sawyer County EMS was on the scene and administered lifesaving efforts before Arnold was flown to a Minnesota hospital, where his conditions are unknown at this time. This investigation is currently being handled by the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations.
