(WFRV) - On Thursday, the Wisconsin State Patrol announced its 'Law of the Month' for October, which is pedestrian safety, intending to eliminate crashes that cause harm to those on walkways. According to the release, 45 pedestrians were killed on Wisconsin roads in 2023. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a pedestrian is injured every eight minutes and killed every 70 minutes in a crash across the nation. Wisconsin man arrested after pursuit through Fond du Lac County ends with 4 flat tires "Walking and running are some of the best forms of exercise and transportation," Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan said in the release. Wisconsin's pedestrian laws are listed in the release as follows: Drivers must: Yield to pedestrians in sidewalks, alleys or driveways Yield to pedestrians who are crossing the street on a walk signal/green light Yield to pedestrians crossing highways in crosswalks at an intersection with no lights or signals Not overtake or pass vehicles that stop to allow pedestrians to cross Pedestrians must: Yield to drivers when crossing a road without a crosswalk, or when there is no walk signal active, but a green light is Not move into the path of an approaching vehicle that lacks the necessary yield time Walk on the left side of the road when not on the sidewalk Wisconsin man dead after two-vehicle crash on State Highway 73 The release added that everybody has a role to play in keeping the roads safe in Wisconsin, that drivers should always follow posted signs, pay attention, take extra care in school zones and not block intersection crosswalks. Pedestrians are urged to follow the rules of the road and walk on sidewalks whenever available. For more information, visit the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website.
